Griffin waited down the block and around the corner from Toni’s parents’ house. She’d passed him ten minutes ago, so she should be showing up soon. He half-hated the secrecy of their relationship, and half-loved it. That half liked sneaking around in the dark to kiss her, and hiding under his blankets at night to text her, as if he were one of the fifteen-year-old boys he mentored at camp.

He’d told her about Mike’s mom after the boy had opened up at lunch on Thursday. His side of the story did make the mother seem neglectful, especially when Griffin asked about food in the house and Mike had said they barely had any.

He’d wanted to ask Mike how he’d paid for the three week camp, which was the most expensive one. He’d wanted to give him ten thousand dollars and tell him to order his groceries and put it on Griffin’s debit card.

But he’d learned his first year at Camp Clear Creek that he couldn’t save anyone. Money fixed a lot of things though…

“Hey,” Toni said, interrupting his thoughts as she opened the passenger door and climbed into the cab of the truck. She wore a smile and the same clothes he’d seen her in on Thursday. Short swim skirt, with a flowy cover-up she now had buttoned.

“Ready for this?” he asked. He’d put two kayaks from the camp in the back of his truck that morning, after properly checking them out.

“So ready.” She buckled her seatbelt, and added, “My parents are doing pretty good today.”

“That’s great, sweetheart,” he said.

“How’s Mike?”

Griffin exhaled heavily as he got the truck in gear and back on the road. “I think he’s dreading going home.”

“I called his mother on Friday, but she didn’t answer.”

Griffin glanced over at her, unsurprised to catch a look of concern on Toni’s face. “What’s the next step, then?”

“I’ll call again,” she said. “And those are not fun phone calls to make.”

“I’m sure they aren’t.” And he hated putting her in that position.

“If I can’t get in touch with her, I’ll call child services,” she said. “I’ll have to report it anyway, but I’d like to say I was able to speak to her and get some sort of promise that she’d pay the bills and make sure there was food in the house.”

“He’s only fifteen,” Griffin said. “When I was fifteen, I was fishing and riding motorcycles down ravines.”

“Motorcycles, huh?” Toni grinned at him, that flirtatious glint in her eye. “Sounds about right.”

“I worked plenty, too,” he said. “Four or five hours every day, sometimes before the sun was up.” He’d hated drawing the early morning feedings, and as he’d gotten older, he realized his father was always up then too—and he stayed out until the last chore on the ranch was done too. How he’d done it, Griffin didn’t know.

“Do you like the ranch?” Toni asked, pretty much the same question running through Griffin’s own mind.

“Yeah, sure,” he said lightly. “I like it just fine.”

“But you’re not passionate about it.
